How to care for your hardwood floors
It’s important to sweep or vacuum your floor at least once a week, therefore you can get all the grit off the floor. Also sand and dirt act like a sand paper on your floor and wear down the finish.
- Never use water to mop your floor- Vinegar and water seem like an economical way to clean your floor but its not recommended. Vinegar is an acid and it will break down the finish over time on the surface of your floor, and will reduce the shine and leave a dull appearance. Also don’t use mop and bucket, which leads to an excessive amount of water on the floor.
- What should I use to clean my floor? Fine spray mist cleaners and products that are specifically made for hardwood flooring. We recommend Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner. This kit comes with everything you need to care for your hardwood flooring.
- Professional hardwood floor deep cleaning is recommended once every 1-2 years. High traffic floors may require maintenance coats or polish as needed.
- We recommend using felt pads under furniture legs, these important scratch and scuff protectors can be found in most hardware stores available in all shapes and sizes.
- Keep your pet’s nails trimmed, especially indoor dogs, because when running around on hardwood floors, they can cause expensive damage over time. Softer wood species are more prone to gauge and scratch, therefore even most durable floor finishes will not prevent this from happening.
- Use area rugs at the main entrances to your home, since small rugs collect grit from your shoes, so you end up having less of it on your floor.
- Try using area rugs with a sealed bottom where water exposure is present, since water and other liquid drips from ice maker, sink, dishwasher, toilet or pet’s water bowl area can eventually damage the flooring when not swiped up.
- Placing plastic trays under plants that are on the floor will prevent constant excessive moisture from the moist plant soil. Otherwise it would cause the hardwood flooring expansion and discoloration in that area.
- Finally, if possible, avoid direct sun exposure to your hardwood floor, use blinds, curtains, etc. We recommend UV blocking window film on glass that exposes direct sunlight to the hardwood floor.
